"They're children.  They talk, they play."

I've been thinking about this for a few days, and finally figured to put this item on this page as seeming most appropriate.

A recent warning from the American Medical Association asked parents not to give cold and fever medicines to young children, as it may cause problems, or have adverse side effects.  How blatantly two-faced is that?

They ask parents not to give their children these medications, yet thousands of children as young as three years old are being diagnosed with ADHD, bi-polarism, or other such things and are perscribed portions of adult doses of anti-depressents, and such which have never been tested on anyone younger than 18.

We have seen, first hand - through the friend of our oldest daughter - the effects of these drugs on young children.  Her doctors and case workers had her on three anti-depressents.  The combination countered the effects of the other.  I was warned that this girl was a handful, but I never had a day of trouble with her in my classes.  She became our daughters best friend, and she continues to be a welcome guest in our house.

I recently read where preschool enrollment is up.  This should be an alarming statistic.  More three and four year olds are put in day care centers and preschools, instead of being raised by the best teacher/mentors in the world - mommy and/or daddy.

If the household is single parent, I can understand.  Mom or dad has to go off to work, the siblings are also in school, what else do you do with junior?

It's too bad that both mom and dad are out in the work force, trying to pay for their $300,000 home, and their new BMW or Hummer.  Is a big screen TV really a necessity.  (I cry when I got into friends homes who are in a worse financial situation that I am, and they have a great big TV, amongst the rest of the squaller in their home.)

It's on both ends of the spectrum, too.  I remember when I started teaching.  Some of my students families were having a hard time keeping food on the table, yet the parents always had their booze and cigarettes, and the high school kids had their $100 basketball shoes.

The recent news out of the Left Coast has it that actor/director Rob Reiner is behind a push for "state provided" pre-school for four-year-olds.

First of all, its not "free". The whole expense of this boondoggle would fall into the taxpayers laps. Just think of it, California citizens. You get to pay for another year of schooling, and a whole slew of teachers needed to help teach these young, fresh minds.

The second thing is that the best place for young children to learn is from mommy and daddy. As mentioned on my "Home-School" page, there are mountains of studies that can't identify any advantages to putting young children in pre-school, up through the second to third grade. But then again, I doubt that there are many "stay at home" moms in Hollywood - let alone Los Angeles, or California for that matter.

One other point is, for those of us who do remember recent history, which societies removed the young children from the home, and indoctrinated them to the "State's" way of thinking? Communisim for one. Anyone who knows anything about World War Two also knows that Germany and Japan took young children out of the home, and sent them to "youth camps".

And what about hugs? Teachers cannot give kids hugs in most schools for fear of lawsuits. Imagine a 4 year old who is hurt, and nobody can hold them on their lap to comfort them. When a kid is upset, they just naturally need hugs and comforting, and someone standing at a distance saying it will be all right, is not enough.

A recent study in France came to the conclusion that the "traditional" family structure - mother, father, and kids - is the most healthy.

Its amazing that the French figured this out, as liberal as that society is, and the vocal minority in this country hasn't got a clue.
